Academic Exploration Advising

COVID-19 Services Update

In accordance with USC operating procedures, Academic Exploration Advising (AEA) is providing advising services in person and online, subject to availability. Advisors can be reached by email, or by scheduling an available appointment through myUSC.

Additional information about the University Roadmap to Return can be found on the we-are.usc.edu website.

Exploratory and Students-In-Transition Advising

Academic Exploration Advising (AEA) is the designated advising office for students who are Exploratory, Undecided or Undeclared, and Students-In-Transition.  Choosing an academic home at USC is a process, and the AEA academic advisors are here to assist you each step of the way.  Most students experience some academic uncertainty during their time at USC.  Additional information on the different academic programs at USC is available under Academic Programs of Study, including How to Choose a Major and Choosing a Minor.

AEA advisors collaborate closely with other campus partners including, but not limited to, academic departments and faculty, Academic Review and Retention, Degree Progress, Office of Student Accessibility Services, Financial Aid, and the Kortschak Center for Learning and Creativity.  For additional information on learning support services, please visit Academic Resources.

If you are an Exploratory, Undecided or Undeclared student, you will meet with your assigned AEA advisor each semester until you officially declare a major.  If you are not currently Exploratory, Undecided or Undeclared but would like to meet with an AEA advisor to change your major, please email us at Exploration.advising@usc.edu.

Schedule an Appointment

To schedule an appointment with an advisor, go to myUSC and click on Undergraduate Advisement. There you will find contact information for your advisor along with their appointment scheduling link. If you are not currently in an AEA program (Exploratory, Undecided, Undeclared, Undergraduate Success Program, etc.) please email Exploration.advising@usc.edu to request an appointment.

Drop-In Advising

AEA advisors offer virtual drop-in advising at various points during the semester, including during the first three weeks and registration deadline days. Drop-in advising offers space for students to address questions about their current semester enrollment and plans. Students who would like to make longer term plans for future semesters are encouraged to set up an advising appointment for after the first three weeks of the semester. Students are sent an email with the sign-in link, or they can navigate to the Undergraduate Advisement icon on myUSC to find the sign-in link posted there.

During drop-in advising, the AEA advisors are available from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Students should refer to their emails or myUSC for the sign-in link. Drop-in advising is done on a first-come, first-serve basis; once students have signed in they are entered into a queue for meeting with an advisor. When an advisor is ready to meet with a student, they will send an email to the student’s USC email address with a link to the zoom room.

Additional guidelines that students should bear in mind during drop-in advising:

  • No advising appointments can be made during this drop-in period.
  • Use this time zone calculator if you are outside of Los Angeles and want to check the time difference.
  • Wait times may be shorter if you are willing to meet with the first available advisor, instead of your assigned advisor.
  • Sign-ins will close 30 minutes before the end of each drop-in advising period. (Los Angeles time)

Mandatory Advising

A one-on-one meeting is required at least once each semester for all students who are currently Exploratory, Undecided or Undeclared, and is recommended for students who have been referred to AEA for major exploration. Advisors are available for both appointment and drop-ins during mandatory advising.

The AEA Spring 2023 mandatory advising dates are included below in the AEA Calendar of Events – October 2022 Calendar PDF. The November 2022 Calendar PDF will be available mid-October 2022.

Communicating with your advisor

Advisors are available to students Monday-Friday. We ask that you allow 1-2 business days (not including the weekends) for an advisor to respond to your emails.

AEA Calendar of Events

The AEA Calendar of Events is updated and posted monthly. This calendar lists important university and academic unit deadlines, events and registration information.
