Math and Chemistry Placement Exams

For new students entering USC for the first time:

New students entering USC for the first time should refer to orientation.usc.edu for complete details regarding online placement tests.  Some important information about online tests:

  • Students can take the Math and Chemistry placement exams online as part of the Pre-Orientation Checklist.  Check the Orientation website for a list of majors that require the Math and/or Chemistry placement exams.
  • Online Math and Chemistry placement exams must be completed no later than 10 days before the start of your Orientation event.
  • Students will be able to access their online placement results for Math and Chemistry through the Orientation website.
  • The placement results from both the online tests and the paper and pencil tests are accessible to academic advisors.
  • Students with disabilities who are not yet registered with USC Disability Services and Programs should contact their office at ability@usc.edu to make arrangements for testing accommodations at least two weeks prior to the scheduled placement exam dates.

For continuing students:

  • Online placement tests are available only to incoming students.
  • A USC ID is required to take the paper and pencil version of the Math and Chemistry placement tests.
  • Test dates, times, locations, and descriptions can be found here.
  • A 60-minute Math test and 30-minute Chemistry test will be administered in the paper and pencil format on those dates.
  • Students must wait six (6) months before retaking any placement exam.
  • Hard copies of the results are issued through Testing Services in STU 300. Results are not given over the phone.
  • Placement results are accessible to academic advisors.

Important Exam Information

  • There are no fees for the placement exams.
  • A picture ID is required to sit for a placement exam.
  • Please arrive 10 minutes before the start of the test.
  • The test administrations can take up to 2 hours, so plan accordingly.
  • Results from paper and pencil placement tests may be picked up in person at our office in STU 300.
  • Students with disabilities who are not yet registered with USC Disability Services and Programs should contact their office at ability@usc.edu to make arrangements for testing accommodations at least two weeks prior to the scheduled placement exam dates.
  • Math and Chemistry exams may not be repeated online.
  • However, online placement exams taken as part of the Pre-Orientation Checklist may be repeated on paper and pencil in August during Fall Welcome Week, and in January during Spring Welcome Week.
